The United States in 1940

[ Franklin D. Roosevelt ]

Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat) was President. The 76th Congress was in session. A dollar in that year would be worth $13.56 in 2006 for most consumable products.

Some 50.8% of Americans 17 years and older were high school graduates; this number was nearly twice as many as a decade earlier. During this year, about 1,221,000 Americans graduated from high school (nearly twice as many as a decade earlier), 186,500 from college (half again as many as a decade earlier). The median school years completed by Americans overall was 8.6 years, an increase of more than two months from a decade earlier.

There were 5 reported lynchings in the United States during this year; 4 of the victims were black, 1 of them white. (Apparently what terrible things that happened to Native Americans or to Asians did not get counted.)
