During that time a Sunday School was organized starting with one pupil but began to grow until we had forty. A junior choir was also started and our Christmas Pageants were enjoyed by many people. Our missionary society was one of the highlights of my ministry in Woodstock, and I always found the members to be very helpful and to be interested in the church work.The pastor reminded the congregation that the 150th anniversary was only a year away and that a new carpet and several other improvements were needed. By October, there was enough money to purchase a new carpet for the church.
The congregation consisted of 69 members.
A Hammond electric organ was placed in the church and, as a demonstration for the congregation, was played by Roger Baer of Kingston. Almost all of those present voted to purchase the organ. Lydia Russell, 76, who had been the organist for several decades, apparently did not want to play it. (She also had never permitted the electrification of her old farmhouse.) In October, she became "honorary organist." According to the reminiscences of Elsa Holumzer,
I joined the choir as an alto under the leadership of Pastor Cook, who would then invite us to the parsonage for cake and coffee, cake he had baked. We sang mostly from a monthly issue called the "Volunteer Choir" made for simple choirs such as ours. We may not have been very good, but our heart was in it and we were there 52 Sundays in the year, rain or snow. We had an old pump organ run by Lydia Russell. When it finally gave out and we installed an electric Hammond, she refused to play it as she was still in the gas and oil age. A choir member took over, Annie Eignor.…(2)
