Christ's Lutheran Church in 1989

Pastor Kenneth Jetto, conducting services. According to church historian Mark Anderson, Pastor Jetto is an excellent liturgist. As well as his fine voice, he has an intuitive as well as a schooled grasp of liturgy.

Eleanor Anderson, Bob Barrette, and Lois Ostapczuk formed the local "Vision 2000" organization, to face the problems of drug and alcohol abuse, especially among the young people in Woodstock. Vision 2000 staged "First Night" events: drug- and alcohol-free community celebrations on New Year's Eve [to ring in the New Year 1989; see the end-of-year report below].

The 12-year-old Friendly Visitation Group, led by Erwin and Elsa Holumzer, continued their regular ministry of visits to two area homes for senior citizens located in Lake Hill. As Erwin Holumzer, 69, wrote:

[We] have continued the practice of having a Christian service of worship, including hymns, scripture readings, prayer and sermonettes.… At Easter, cakes and flowers have been given and during the harvest season locally grown apples were also given.… This Thanksgiving the youth group journeyed with us to the homes and presented the cookies and cakes they made. During the course of the year we visited people from the homes in the local hospitals and attended funeral services. We give thanks to all of those who participated in this ministry of our church, praying God will continue to strengthen and bless us all.(1) Quoted in Anderson, Mark J., For All the Saints: Christ's Lutheran Church, Woodstock, New York, 1806-2006 [Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse, 2006], p. 137. Vision 2000 [by Eleanor Anderson]. Vision 2000 was started in 1989 by members of our congregation to address the problems of drug and alcohol abuse. We have sponsored several community programs including First Night, 1989, a community drug and alcohol free New Years Eve celebration, a Community Planning Conference, a Middle School Age picnic and swim party, and a leadership workshop for high school students leading to the formation of the P.O.W.E.R. Co. (Positive Options With Effective Results). The P.O.W.E.R. Co. meets monthly to plan alcohol and drug free activities for high school age students. We are encouraged by the congregational and community support and intend 1990 to be a year of refinement and expansion.
