Church Council agrees to a trial month for Family of Woodstock to use Fellowship Hall for a free hot meal program on Monday Wednesday and Friday evenings. Victoria Langling is the church liaison for the program.
Langling, the co-founder and general director of the Daily Bread Soup Kitchen project, was working with many others to get it off the ground.
We held open meetings for input and met with community leaders to ascertain where would be the best place for the soup kitchen to be sited. I remember Barbara Stephens driving her van with my children still in car seats, visiting other area soup kitchens to see what they did and what we could model. I took a class at UCCC to learn how to establish a governing board and we all learned by trial and error what worked and what didn't. With nursery school and building safety concerns, we needed to find an alternative to cooking on site and came up with insulated containers that could be filled with hot soup and shuttled from a local restaurant to our church. We formed partnerships with area restaurants and with other houses of worship, including all the Christian churches, the Jewish Congregation and the Onteora Teachers Assoc.(2) Quoted in ibid., pp. 138-39.
